- Catherine Hill 11/05/2025It was lovely, when we finally got there. You need to be fit and able for this trek though, it's down a lot of uneven ground/stairs. Then a walk across a little wooden bridge, to go up some steep stairs and down a further hill. Needless to say, if you don't like heights or unsteady on your feet, this isn't for you.By the time I got to the waterfall area, my legs were like jelly and my knees wouldn't stop shaking (I don't like heights), so I had to let my friend wonder round and take the photos. We went on a Sunday so it was very busy and crossing paths with people, I just had to stop, as I could let stand near the edge...The hike back up was tiring, but we survived! Was it worth it, not really, I wouldn't do it again.Oh and parking costs £5.read moreread less
- Андрей Столяров 10/05/2025It ain't too bad, parking is a little tight but you can get away with it. The way down is a little steep but again, you can live with it. People that are not confident on their legs, elderly, young kids etc etc should take extra care. Waterfall itself was crowded as you would expect on the weekend. - harley routledge 28/04/2025Fantastically magical place!! Well worth the visit.... leave your pram or push chair far away and put on your walking boots and "strong legs!!" - April Daniel 25/04/2025The post I saw said family friendly, yes if your family are all super fit hikers!, not old,or in a pushchair. Long legs would help as some of the steps were broken/missing. Note it is a small car park (free) with an overflow run by the farm next door (£5) and a very steep walk down, so a very steep walk back up! There are some wooden steps, one of which was missing at the time of visit which made access a little trickier.read moreread less
- justin ogilvie 24/04/2025A must do visit if you’re in the area a fairly easy but quite steep walk back of about 15 to 20 minutes, good car park and absolutely well worth visiting, lovely wooded setting and impressive waterfallread moreread less
- Maria Johnson 21/04/2025Path needs desperate maintainance. Not suitable for anyone with walking difficulties. Path down to the river is very steep and the path to the waterfall is slippery and dangerous. There are wooden steps over the river that hasn't been looked after with one step missing. To get to the water is a decent drop which I wasn't able to do. Also nowhere to sit, so we only stayed 10 minutes before heading back. The waterfall was nice to look at but wasn't worth it for me as a disabled person, don't be fooled by others saying it's an easy walk like I did.read moreread less
- Martin 20/04/2025Don’t bother! Tiny car park, farm next door offers all day parking for £5. What you would do there all day bemuses me. Extremely poorly maintained access down a steep & uneven path (even more so wet) then up wooden steps that need replacing as one missing at our visit & several treads also loose. The end of the struggle was a waterfall that tbh wasn’t that much, yes it was falling but certinslly not worth the trudge between the visitors scurrying for a viewpoint. Not for me thanksread moreread lessTerry Sargeant 20/04/2025The falls were really good a good flow of water and you can go behind the waterfall you will get wet and the pathway is not for the faint hearted quite steep in places and was wet when we went there are also a bridge and steps you have to cross and climb doesn't help when there's a step missing 🤔 but once there it's worth the trek.read moreread less
- Graham Nicholls 19/04/2025Have visited this place several times in the past.I will say there is a bit of a steep hill climb but not too far from the carpark to get to the waterfall.I visited this spring with a very low water flow because of lack of rainfall the past few months but it was still worth seeing the beauty from a different angle as when it's in full flow you are stuck to the pathways and getting wet unless you have good waterproofs.Good footwear also advisableread moreread less
- Kathryn Hicks 16/04/2025I really love visiting this waterfall. There is a car park which is easy to park in, although part of the road leading up to it is single lane but with passing points. There is an overflow car park for busy days, which has a burger van where you can purchase food, tea, and coffee after your visit to the waterfall. The path down to the waterfall is easy to follow. All I would say is when it's been raining, do take extra care, especially when crossing the wooden bridge as it can be slippery. The waterfall really is amazing to see, and you can walk behind it. Again, take extra care when navigating the path to do this. Highly recommend a visit. It took us around 27mins up and down.read moreread less

- Steven 14/04/2025Standing at 90ft, this is the tallest waterfall in South Wales. You can even walk behind the cascade, famously featured as the Batcave in The Dark Knight Rises. It's sad to see some visits spoiled by misunderstandings about what Henrhyd falls is and what is has to offer, so if you're unfamiliar to natural attractions and waterfalls and would like to visit, I'd recommend noting the following points:1. This is a natural feature with paths maintained by National Trust for access, but it is not a large tourist facility - expect a more... rugged... experience.2. Water flow depends on rainfall; it’s best after rain but paths may get muddy.3. Sturdy approach footwear (e.g. boots) is recommended: it can be slippery and wet.4. A moderate level of fitness is required.5. Steep paths and uneven terrain make it unsuitable for prams or wheelchairs.6. Don't expect to have the place to yourself; it can be busy, especially on weekends. Visit early or on weekdays for a quieter time.7. There are no bins or toilets on-site—take rubbish home and plan ahead.8. There is a free car park nearby, but it fills quickly. This is a rural area and wasn't built with cars in mind, so expect narrow country lanes.read moreread less

- Emily Holbrook 31/03/2025Lovely place to go and free parking (not sure if paid in peak season). Little cafe in the car park selling hot drinks, ice cream, etc.Overall a lovely place to walk and view the waterfall and also be able to walk behind the waterfall.Very steep descent down the path from the car park with a bridge to get you across the stream but even though it was dry it was very muddy and slippery as there were puddles.Once you go over the bridge and up the steps you can walk to view the waterfall which is flat and then you can walk to get behind the waterfall in the open cave but the "path" is natural and not man made so take care as slippery and very uneven and a drop on your left.Would say not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs at all and make sure your fit to get back up the hill as it is very steep but only around a 10-15 walk down/up to the waterfall.read moreread less
- Treva Williams 25/03/2025Very attractive waterfall. We went in March 2025 and we arrived at 8.30 am at the car park which was big enough for about 20 cars but I think there is an overflow area. Steep walk down then wooden steps up before you reach the waterfall. You can access the waterfall if you want to get behind it via a rocky path so wear suitable footwear. - Emma T 05/03/2025⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ | Henrhyd Falls: Nostalgia, Nature & a Splash of Batman Henrhyd Falls - one of my absolute favourite places, where childhood nostalgia meets the realisation that nothing has changed… except maybe the water level. As a kid, I used to visit every year while staying with my incredibly active grandmother (seriously, was she training for the Olympics?), and now, as an adult, I come back expecting it to feel smaller or easier to trek. Nope. Still breathtaking, still stunning, still capable of making me question my fitness levels. For the film buffs, this is the waterfall from The Dark Knight Rises - you know, where Batman dramatically flies in and out of the Batcave. Very cinematic, although in real life, it’s mostly tourists trying not to stack it on the slippery rocks. I think it holds some kind of impressive record - highest waterfall in South Wales? Most accidental soakings per year? Who knows. Would I recommend? Absolutely. Just be prepared for a potentially heroic climb back up, and if you’re waiting for Christian Bale to emerge from behind the falls… well, I’ve been waiting for years. Note: Henrhyd Falls is the tallest waterfall in South Wales, plunging 90 feet (27 meters) into a wooded gorge. It served as the entrance to the Batcave in the film “The Dark Knight Rises.”read moreread less
- Neil Stewart 21/02/2025Amazing place. Free to park, a 15 mins walk, not suitable for push chairs, wheel chairs or those that struggle to walk inclines. Not heavy going but mildly challenging. The falls themselves are beautiful and well worth seeing. Again, the sure footed fairy better here, you can actually get behind the falls. Mixed group 8yrs to 52 yes, all enjoyed it, allow about 1 hour for your visit, more if you want to sit and soak up the beauty! - Matt Ballard 15/11/2024An absolute must when visiting Wales. A big car park for free and easily sign posted. The walk itself is down a steep and somewhat slippery hill and walking across a wooden bridge and staircase so adequate footwear is required. The walk itself is about 10 minutes from the carpark to the waterfall. Once at the waterfall the pure beauty is captured by the rushing water and area. There is a walk way to the right that once navigated you can walk behind the waterfall and into the cave, bring a coat ! You will get wet ! Definitely worth it though!read moreread less
- Mr Bukaroo 08/11/2024Walked here from Penycae, which was around 3km. There’s a small carpark with an info board and a cafe with some seats. As others have written the walk to the waterfall is short, but down a steep slope, which is pretty slippery underfoot when wet and the soil is clay. Once at the bottom, then you have to go up a small amount of steep wooden steps. When we came, we were the only ones here, but wouldn’t want to be going up and down these when its busy, especially as they were slippery. If you have dogs, you need to make a decision if they will be able to get up the steps and down them again. That said, when you get to the waterfall it’s worth it. Very picturesque and there is a path going behind the waterfall so you can see it from both sides. From this waterfall it’s possible to walk to another 3 waterfalls, we didn’t as we had the walk back to Penycae but if you have come in the car it’s something you may consider.read moreread lessGraham Taylor 08/11/2024Went here last week for a look glad we did was a bit busy but great place to vist. - Anna J 30/10/2024Went to this waterfall on a dreary day but the waterfall more than made up for it. At this time of year there was a good amount of water so it was a roaring spectacle. The car park was easy to find, though isn't particularly large. However, there is an overflow car park next door run by a local farmer, which also has a little food van in it. The walk down is quite a long way, much further than we had realised! We didn't want to come back up that way with all the ups and downs so we ended up going up the other side which was easier. Well worth the visit. Ordinarily, you can walk behind the falls but we didn't chance this as the water was so powerful.read moreread lessKaleigh Smith 29/10/2024Nice easy parking. - Charli 28/10/2024We visited Henrhyd Falls and found easy parking (out of season) at the National Trust car park free of charge. It was a steep walk down (and back up), also with steep staircase steps and a bridge, but really worth it if you are able too - it’s not accessible or for those with mobility difficulties. You can take a path down behind the waterfall which is worth it if you can - and are careful with your footing!!read moreread less
- Kevin Thomas 25/10/2024Free parking, stunning views, not too far from the waterfall (best time to go after a couple of days heavy rain).. - Tracey Brewer 18/10/2024Not for the less fit! Very steep woodland path that is a real struggle to walk back up. - david baguley 18/10/2024Was a great day out here. A good walking route is shown on the information board at the carpark. There is a free carpark with room for around 15-20 cars. Also the farmer to the side of the carpark allows parking for £5. It's a rather steep slope to get down to the bottom and back up again so suitable footwear is advised. You can go behind the waterfall but the rocks can be very slippery so be careful. The waterfall itself is great especially when there's been recent heavy rain and it's in full flow. If it is flowing well then water resistant or waterproof clothing is a good idea as the waterfall splashes water pretty far. - Pete Jeffs 12/09/2024If you love nature, wildlife and spectacular scenery then you really should visit Henrhyd Falls. The main waterfall is the highest in southern Wales and yes you can walk behind it. It is set in a steep sided valley so the climb out of the valley is a bit of a challenge for those not used to the great outdoors. Just take it easy and you'll be fine. Muddy after rain so wear good walking boots. There is a trail following the river downstream which can be followed and is well worth the effort. Alternatively there is access lower down the valley and you can then walk up to the main fall. New facilities have appeared at the upstream end, picnic tables, van serving drinks etc plus alternative parking areas and I spotted a pair of alpacas .. can't comment any further on that as I was running late and couldn't take the timeread moreread less
About
The ‘Batman’ Waterfall is the highest single drop fall in South Wales, tucked away on the western edge of the Brecon Beacons, near the upper Swansea valley.Henrhyd Falls is a spectacular and beautiful waterfall with a unbroken drop of 90ft (27m) making it the highest waterfall in the Brecon Beacons national Park. The waterfall is owned by the National Trust and entry is free.Access
Henrhyd Waterfall is located in a deep wooded gorge which is accessible only by walking down a steep but well maintained footpath. Allow 20-30 mins each way. The walk takes you through a native woodland of Oak and Ash. A foot bridge across the river Nant leech at the bottom of the Gorge leads to a path that takes you to the waterfall itself. Particular care should be taken as you near the waterfall because the path becomes narrow, the surface more uneven and is often wet and slippery from the spray the waterfall produces. It is possible to make your way along a narrow, stony and uneven path behind the waterfall which extreme care. It is strongly advised not to try this when fall is in full flow as the spray makes it almost impossible to stand on the narrow rocky path. If you have children with you then especial care should be taken to surpass them throughout this walk.Batmans Waterfall
Henrhyd Waterfall also known locally as the Batcave after a cameo appearance in the Batman movie ‘The dark Knight Rises’. In the movie after receiving a package from Bruce, Blake locates the hidden waterfall entrance to the Batcave.Parking
A small unattended national Trust Carpark can be found at the top of the access footpath. There are several information boards showing the route of the walk.Alternative route
A longer and very scenic trail through the Nant Llech Gorge taking in several smaller falls on the way can be found near the village of Abercrave and takes approx 2 hours each way. This trail joins the main access path near the wooden bridge at the bottom of the gorge. See Nant Llech Trail for details.Photos
